A Colorado Adventure Elopement at Lost Gulch Overlook | Raven & James
Some wedding days are elaborate productions planned over months or even years. Others come together quickly but somehow feel exactly as they were meant to be.
Raven and James traveled all the way from Iowa to Colorado with their two children for an intimate mountain elopement. What began with a social media message turned into plans within hours, and before I knew it, we were meeting at one of Colorado's most breathtaking locations to celebrate a love story more than a decade in the making.
Their wedding day was simple, meaningful, and unforgettable.
Above the Mountains: A Family Adventure at Lost Gulch Overlook
Nestled high above Boulder, Lost Gulch Overlook is the kind of place that reminds you just how wild and beautiful Colorado can be. Massive boulders scatter the landscape, creating a natural playground that seems as though it was designed specifically for mountain goats and adventurous souls.
As we carefully made our way across the rocks toward an incredible panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains, Raven looked absolutely stunning. She wore a beautiful white gown paired with a delicate birdcage-style veil pinned softly into her hair, giving her an elegant, timeless look. Their daughter looked equally enchanting in a sparkly white dress and tiny high heels, ready for her own moment in front of the camera.
Although Raven admitted she was nervous about heights and told me they might need some guidance in front of the camera, you never would have known it from the photographs. She carried herself with grace, confidence, and poise. Every image reflects a calm beauty that perfectly matched the mountain backdrop.
What stood out most was the way James cared for her throughout the session. Whether he was pulling her close, kissing her forehead, wrapping an arm around her waist, or simply standing beside her, there was an unmistakable sense of comfort and security between them. It wasn't flashy or performative. It was steady. Familiar. The kind of love built over years of shared life, trust, and commitment.
After twelve years together, their connection felt effortless—the kind of partnership that doesn't need to prove anything because it already knows exactly what it is
The Real Stars of the Day
While the mountain views were spectacular, the heart of this day was the family standing in front of them.
Raven and James share two incredible children who were an absolute joy to photograph. As a photographer, you meet families from every walk of life, and every now and then you encounter children who leave a lasting impression. These two did exactly that.
Their daughter had confidence and personality for days. During her portraits with her dad, she effortlessly slipped into model mode, striking poses, flashing peace signs, and bringing so much energy and fun to the session. She was expressive, playful, and completely comfortable in front of the camera.
Their son was equally wonderful in his own way. He was fascinated by the mountain views surrounding us and approached every photo with patience and enthusiasm. At one point, I asked him to stand exactly like his dad for a portrait. With almost no direction at all, he nailed the pose immediately. His willingness to participate and his respectful nature made photographing him incredibly easy.
The Kind of Family You Remember
The sibling photos may have been my favorite moments of all. Getting them to hug, laugh, and interact naturally brought out genuine smiles and plenty of laughter. Watching them together made it clear that the bond within this family runs deep.
What struck me throughout the entire evening wasn't simply how cooperative the children were. It was the respect they showed one another, the kindness they displayed, and the obvious love shared among all four family members. Every interaction felt genuine. Every embrace felt natural. There was a warmth to this family that simply can't be staged.
As photographers, we often spend just a few hours with our clients, but sometimes that's all it takes to recognize something special. This was one of those families. They were thoughtful, gracious, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time with. From beginning to end, they made the entire experience feel effortless.
A Colorado Memory They'll Never Forget
Raven and James were only in Colorado for a few short days before returning home to Iowa, but I am incredibly grateful our paths crossed during their adventure. It was an honor to document this milestone and preserve these memories for them.
Their Colorado elopement wasn't simply about exchanging vows against a stunning mountain backdrop. It was about celebrating twelve years of love, two amazing children, and a family foundation built on trust, respect, and unwavering support for one another.
Some couples photograph beautifully because they know how to pose.
Raven and James photographed beautifully because of how they love.
Theirs is the kind of love that feels comfortable, steady, and deeply rooted—the kind that has already weathered seasons together and continues to grow stronger. Watching the way they cared for one another throughout the evening, it was impossible not to see a future filled with many more adventures, milestones, and memories together.
I am so thankful God crossed our paths and allowed me to capture this chapter of their story. Their Colorado adventure may have lasted only a few days, but the memories—and these photographs—will last a lifetime.
Every love story deserves to be remembered. If you're planning a Colorado elopement, I'd love to help preserve the moments you'll cherish for a lifetime.
